Isaac Scott Hathaway, one of the great unknown American artists, was trained at the New England Conservatory of Music and established ceramics department at Branch Normal College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. Most notably, Hathaway was the first African American artist to design a circulating coin for the United States Mint. He designed the Booker T. Washington half dollar in 1946 and the Booker T. Washington/George Washington Carver half dollar in 1951.
